I recently read that one of the darling's of Web 2.0, Twitter, a micro-blogging application tool, had some issues with monetizing their application. With such a vast user base and a strong following, me being a supporter since late 2006 as well, i would like to offer my thoughts on 4 great ways to monetize Twitter, this, from an Asian entrepreneurs perspective. Yes it's different.
1) Play-By-Play - A premium service for play-by-play reporting of sports games (football, soccer, lottery results, etc). Suited for those on the road and those who have no access to TV/Radio during work / meetings (yes!).
2) An Official Twitter Desktop Tool - No, not an Adobe AIR version, but one that's written in Dot Net ala MSN Messenger, AOL Messenger, Yahoo Messenger style. Call it 'Twitter Messenger' if you have too. Well obviously, this paid version has got to have a lot more added advantages than other desktop / mobile versions. I'm sure you can figure something out. Focus it on 'updating' rather than DM (direct messaging).
3) Funnelization - 'Funnelize' the lines of text updating by targeting the channeling of private groups, private divisions, products, family or even by occupation. It is these users (sub-target them again) that would pay a premium for updates or keeping close to each other.
4) PowerTwitter Jackpot - Start the world's first 'PowerTwitter Jackpot'. Only for paid users and the winner will be selected by username of course and not by numbers. But of course, ramp up by milestone / target / prize winnings. But of course, when i say 'jackpot' i don't really mean prize money like a typical jackpot. The prizes could range from a gift to perhaps a free holiday.
Twitter, reinvent yourself however, keep the relevancy. You have the first mover, use it. Outflank, outsmart and kill off your competition (if you think you have one). Constantly 'attack' your own products (your application of course) by reinventing, reinnovating and reimprovising. It will all pay off someday.

Powerball Twitter, now that sounds interesting!
